Fun facts

Cantina Produttori San Michele Appiano is a cooperative winery born in 1907. The 330 wine-growing families work their vineyards in harmony with nature, and the secret to their success is the combination of decades of experience and constantly striving for perfection. The unique terroir, the respectful dealing with the grapes, and careful processing guarantee unique wines filled with character

Appiano - at the doorstep of the Dolomites - with over 1,000 hectares of vineyards, is the largest South Tyrolean wine-growing municipality in the heart of Bolzano Province.

The 390 hectars of vineyards of the winery’s 320 members are scattered across sunny slopes, where nature offers first-class conditions for outstanding wines.

The majority of Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon and Pinot Noir vineyards are located at an altitude between 400 and 700 metres, on the slopes at the foot of the Mendola massif, an area known as Monte Appiano. The most precious natural gift of the territory is the remarkable temperature range: high daytime temperatures, together with the warm Ora wind blowing from south to north, allow the necessary sugars to accumulate inside the grape. Cool nights, due to the winds blowing down the Mendola Massif, regulate the grape acidity, preventing early ripening and preserving the acids and aromatic components. These winds have a dual function: they both dry the grapes quickly after it rains, protecting against fungal infestation and they allow the grapes to cool down at night.
