TERRE SICILIANE ROSSO IGP

Notes from the winemaker: “This wine originated from the concept of creating a blend with 3 different grape varieties on 3 different terroirs. The Nerello Mascalese grows in a very hard and salty clay substrate. The Frappato and Nero d'Avola grow in sandy soil and limestone. This results in a highly concentrated wine with pronounced tannins and elevated alcohol content. We think this wine also possesses significant aging potential.”

Tasting notes

Deep, savoury and complex wine with mature fruit, herbs and brine combining to beautiful effect.

Area of production

San Michele in Ganzaria, in the heart of Sicily. Altitude of 430 meters above sea level. Clay and sand soil. Typical Mediterranean climate: very warm and dry in the summer, very little rain.

Production process

Fermentation with indigenous yeasts. 5 days of maceration on the skins in vertical “tini”, the skin gets manually pressed down 2 times a day, without temperature control or added yeasts. The wine rests for an additional year in concrete tanks, followed by two years in the bottle in the cellar.

Fun facts

Lamoresca is a small producer in the southern province of Catania, where the hot Mediterranean climate is tempered by 450 meters altitude. Here, Fillipo Rizzo works with indigenous varieties, adhering to minimal-intervention practises in both vineyard and cellar. His reds are bright, and crunchy and have a real sense of life to them, the white is saline and exotic. These are wines of rare character and great energy. Pure, natural, and fundamentally delicious to the last drop.

Awards

95 Points - "Juicy liquorice, cherry and aromatic herbs, a subtle and spicy smokiness to it also. Lots of crunch, kind of fine sandstone tannin, again that liquorice and amaro thing, red fruits, fine and sappy acid profile, and all the crushed rock and perfume to close. Wonderful wine. So different, really vital, and so of a place/producer. Compelling." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
